A patron comes to the desk asking for help with a resume. Ten minutes in, it turns out the resume isn't really the problem. They've driven a delivery route for twelve years, their back is done, and they're thinking about bookkeeping or office management but have no idea where to start. Can libraries support career changers? Yes, and I'd argue we're one of the best first stops they have, as long as we treat career support as a connected service and not a single job-search database.

## What career changers actually need from us

The laid-off office worker, the newcomer with professional experience from another country, the parent coming back after years at home: their goals differ, but they usually need the same three things.

- **Clarity.** They know they want out, but not which jobs are realistic, which skills transfer, or what the new field's vocabulary even means.
- **Access.** A working computer, decent Wi-Fi, a quiet table, printing, and someone patient enough to help with an online application portal.
- **Momentum.** A career change is a long list of small tasks. Our job is to help them find the next one and come back for the one after that.

## We don't have to become a workforce agency

We aren't replacing workforce boards, employment counselors, community colleges, or settlement agencies, and trying to burns out a small team. What works is being a welcoming first stop with clear handoffs. When the patron needs credential evaluation, legal advice, intensive job placement, or benefits counseling, staff should know exactly who to refer them to. I keep a one-page referral sheet at the desk with names and phone numbers, not just agency websites.

## Build the service around how people actually change careers

Nobody goes from "I'm stuck" to "I got the job" in one visit, so I organize career help in stages.

### 1. Exploration

Give patrons ways to compare paths, spot transferable skills, and see typical qualifications. I avoid framing this as a test with an answer. It's a way to generate options and better questions.

Simple displays and short guides by interest (skilled trades, health care, office work, technology) get people past the blank-page feeling that stops them before they start.

### 2. Digital confidence

Even non-technical jobs now involve online applications, video interviews, scheduling apps, and workplace email. Short, repeatable help beats a broad "computer basics" class. A 30-minute session on saving and attaching files, spotting a legitimate job posting, or joining a video call is often exactly what someone needs that week.

I fold in a little media literacy too: career changers are targets for fake job listings and pricey "guaranteed" training offers, so showing someone how to check who's behind an offer is real career help.

### 3. Learning that fits adult lives

Most career changers are still working or caregiving, so they need material they can finish in short sessions. A huge catalog doesn't help if they can't tell where to begin, so I give staff a few one-sentence starting points. "If you're moving into office work, start with these two titles" beats "we have thousands of courses" every time.

### 4. The practical job search

Resume help and interview practice work better after exploration and skill building, because then the patron has a story to tell. Someone moving from retail into customer service or office admin can pull real examples from handling difficult customers, cash, and scheduling, and that story is what makes the resume credible.

Pick a format your staff can sustain. A monthly job club people can count on beats a big one-time event you can't repeat.

## Where Business Expert Press fits

The gap I hear about most is the in-between: patrons want the basics of a new field, but a three-month course is too much. That's where I point libraries to [Business Expert Press](https://www.learnersengaged.com/bep). It's a collection of applied business eBooks, not journals, written by people who do the work and short enough to actually finish.

The collections line up with what career changers ask:

- **Career & Professional Growth** for "I need to level up for a better job." These sit right beside resume help and interview practice.
- **Leadership & Managing People** for the patron who just landed a supervisor role and has never managed anyone.
- **Money Smarts (Finance & Accounting)** for someone moving into bookkeeping or admin who needs the numbers explained in plain language.
- **Marketing & Getting Customers** and **Entrepreneurship & Small Business** for patrons whose career change is starting something of their own.

The access terms are what make it easy to use in a job club: unlimited simultaneous use (no turn-aways when the whole group opens the same title), DRM-free PDF downloads patrons keep on their own devices, and free MARC records so titles show up in your catalog. There are 1,500+ titles under one subscription with about 80 new ones each year.

Where I'd start: after a resume session, hand the patron two short titles for their target field, build a "Level Up at Work" display or LibGuide, and tell your workforce board or chamber partners so they can recommend it between meetings. Learners Engaged handles trials, demos, and quotes for North American public libraries.

## Make career resources easy to find

Patrons often don't connect what we already have to their goal. Label by need, not platform name: "Build job skills," "Practice English for work," "Get help with online applications." Every short description should answer who it's for, what they can do with it, and how long it takes to get started.

Share those descriptions with adult education providers and newcomer services so they can refer people. I also [give frontline staff two or three patron scenarios](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/how-to-get-frontline-staff-recommending-digital-resources) so they can recommend confidently without being career experts. For more ideas on what to stock, see our roundups on [resources for job seekers](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/best-resources-for-job-seekers-public-libraries) and [workforce development in the library](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/workforce-development-library).

## Measure progress without reducing people to placements

We often won't know whether someone got the job. That doesn't mean the service didn't work. Track what we can see: appointments, repeat visits, resource use, workshop attendance, staff referrals, and the follow-up questions patrons bring back. A one-question card ("What did you get done today?") captures progress like a finished application or a started course. Pair the numbers with a few short stories, shared with permission and no identifying details.

We don't have to promise anyone a new career. We offer a place to start, trustworthy tools, and someone who helps turn "I don't know" into a next step. For a lot of career changers, that's what keeps the change moving.
