A lot of the small businesses in our towns don't have a storefront. They have a kitchen table, a laptop, a phone that rings during storytime pickup, and an owner who is figuring it out at 11 p.m. That's the reality behind the question of how libraries support home businesses. Most never call themselves entrepreneurs, but they're at our desks every week.

We don't need to become an incubator. We need to aim what we already do well at the places home businesses get stuck.

## Start with where they actually get stuck

Home-based owners aren't one audience, but they share limited time, limited cash, and little room for a wrong move.

In my experience the sticking points cluster around a few questions:

- Is there demand for this, and who will actually pay?
- What permits, registrations, or zoning rules apply here, in this city?
- How do I price it, and how do I know if I'm making money?
- How do I get customers without a marketing budget?
- What do I need to learn before I take on clients?

We can't give legal, tax, or financial advice, and we should say so. We can help someone find authoritative sources, decode the vocabulary, and walk into the accountant's or licensing office with better questions.

## Hand them something better than a search result

A late-night search sends people to outdated rules and advice written for another state. The useful thing we can build is short: one page or handout organized by those questions above, pointing to your city and county licensing office, your state's business registration site, the local SBDC or SCORE chapter, the chamber, and the research tools you already pay for. Keep it to one sheet; a page with forty links is just another search result.

### Teach source checking as a business skill

[Media literacy](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/how-libraries-build-media-literacy-programs-that-stick) belongs in small business support. A ten-minute segment on checking the date, the author, and whether a source applies to your state is genuinely practical.

## Give them a business shelf they can finish

Many collections have heavyweight databases built for researchers and a few popular print titles that are always out. What's missing is the middle: short, applied books a home business owner can read on a Tuesday night and use Wednesday morning.

That's the gap [Business Expert Press](https://www.learnersengaged.com/bep) fills for us. It's a collection of applied business eBooks, not journals, written by people who do the work. The collections line up with the questions above: Entrepreneurship & Small Business, Marketing & Getting Customers, Money Smarts (finance and accounting for non-accountants), Career & Professional Growth, and Leadership & Managing People.

The terms are what make it work in a public library:

- **Unlimited simultaneous use**, so a whole workshop or job club can open the same title with no holds list.
- **DRM-free PDF downloads**, so an owner can keep the pricing chapter on their own laptop.
- **Free MARC records (including OCLC)**, so titles show up in the catalog from day one.
- **1,500+ titles under one subscription**, with roughly 80 new ones a year.
- Perpetual ownership is available if you'd rather build a collection that lasts.

Where to start: pull two or three titles for each of the five questions and put them on a LibGuide or display with plain labels like "Start a Business," "Get Customers," and "Know Your Numbers." Then give that list to whoever runs your small business office hours. When a SCORE mentor finishes a session, they can point the owner to two short reads instead of a vague "check out the library."

## Make room for work that can't happen at home

Home is often the only option, not a good office. The Wi-Fi drops, kids are around, and the owner needs a quiet room for a client call, a scanner for a contract, or a printer for invoices.

A reservable study room, a reliable workstation, and printing and scanning are real support. Write down the rules first: can someone hold a paid client meeting in a study room, for how long, and what does printing cost? If you offer maker equipment, be clear about training and whether items can be made for sale. Small branches don't need a business center; a quiet table and a bookable hour can be enough.

## Teach one skill at the moment it's needed

Owners rarely want a six-week course. They want one thing right now: writing a service description, setting up a simple budget spreadsheet, or making sense of digital marketing terms. Narrow program titles draw the right people. "Price Your Home Service" will outperform "Entrepreneurship 101."

The BEP site lists programming ideas that fit this model, including Side Hustle Hour, Market Your Business Night, Money Mondays, and a First-Time Manager Circle. Pair any of them with a handful of matching titles so people leave with something to read before the next session.

For newcomer and multilingual owners, [language learning](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/how-libraries-support-language-learners-without-a-classroom) is business support too. Confidence on the phone with a customer or a city inspector matters as much as a business plan.

### Partner without building a referral maze

You probably have a chamber, an SBDC, a SCORE chapter, a workforce board, or a Main Street group nearby. Don't duplicate them. Know what each one does, who it serves, and whether it needs an appointment. Then make the handoff warm: a staff script, a shared calendar, or a [co-hosted session](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/community-partnership-ideas-for-libraries).

## Promote it where owners already are

Mention it during job help, tech coaching, and newcomer appointments. Run a small business post before holiday markets and vendor fairs. Ask circulation staff to listen for "my business" or "my clients" and offer one next step.

## Measure what changed, not just what was clicked

Usage reports show activity, not change. Ask a couple of quick questions after a program or appointment: What were you trying to do? Did this help you take a next step? Watch for patterns, like the same permit question every month or a title that gets used more after office hours mention it. That shapes renewals and programs.

A clearer pricing decision, a finished license application, or someone confident enough to call their first client is the kind of help that keeps a kitchen-table business going.
