# How to Curate Business Content for Library Teams

A job seeker doesn't need another page of search results, and a new business owner doesn't need a folder of reports ...

A job seeker doesn't need another page of search results, and a new business owner doesn't need a folder of reports they can't use. They need a trusted next step. That's what I mean when I talk about how to curate business content: fewer resources, picked on purpose, with a clear way in for patrons and staff.

Business content isn't only for entrepreneurs. At the desk it shows up as interview prep, a career change, or pricing a side business. The strongest collections I've seen aren't the biggest; they fit a real local need.

## Start with the outcome, not the content

"Business" covers career skills, small business planning, workplace communication, money basics, market research, and industry news. Try to cover all of it and a small budget disappears fast.

Decide what success looks like for your community first:

- **Rural library:** resumes, [online applications and job search help](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/best-resources-for-job-seekers-public-libraries), and home-based business questions.
- **Newcomer-heavy community:** workplace English, credential pathways, and news from home countries alongside local job information.
- **Established small business base:** practical research, trusted business news, and leadership reading.

Then ask your frontline staff what patrons request, where they get stuck, and what they wish they had during a reference interaction. Your workforce office and small business partners will fill in the rest.

Pick two or three outcomes you can support well, and selection, promotion, and evaluation all get easier.

## Curate around real tasks

Nobody walks in saying "I'd like some business content." They say "I have an interview Thursday," "How do I price my services?" or "My supervisor wants me to get better at Excel."

So organize around those moments, not vendor names. A "Work and Career" page is far more useful when it opens with specific starting points: job search, interview prep, workplace communication, computer skills, and starting a business.

Here's the test I use. Read the resource through a patron's eyes and ask:

- Can someone tell what it offers in under a minute?
- Can they start without subject knowledge?
- Is it current enough for the task?

If not, it shouldn't be the first thing staff recommend.

### Mix formats on purpose

Give people a few ways in:

- **Short videos** for a quick intro to a workplace skill
- **Courses** for people who want structured, self-paced learning
- **Ebooks and guides** for a focused question, like [Business Expert Press](https://www.learnersengaged.com/bep) titles on practical business topics
- **Templates and worksheets** that turn reading into action
- **Trusted news and analysis** for someone tracking a market or industry

That last one is the piece libraries skip most often.

## Don't skip the business news shelf

This is where I'd put [PressReader](https://www.learnersengaged.com/pressreader) to work. Most libraries think of it as a newsstand, but for business patrons it's a ready-made research shelf: 8,000+ newspapers and magazines from 120+ countries in 60+ languages, including business titles like Forbes and The New York Times, in full print-format editions.

A few practical points worth knowing before you build it into a pathway:

- **Access is simple.** Patrons use their library card, in the branch or from home, on web, iOS, and Android. You don't pick titles one by one; they get the whole catalog.
- **The Economist is exclusive to PressReader.** It comes as a standalone title or as an add-on, so ask about packaging for your library.
- **The New York Times can be activated** on PressReader if your US library already maintains a NYTimes.com subscription. If you have NYT.com and don't see it, ask us and we'll help turn it on.
- **It fits newcomers too.** Patrons can read news in their own language and use the translation and listen tools.
- **Topic follows and alerts** let a patron keep tabs on an industry without starting from scratch every visit.

How I'd use it: add a "Follow your industry" step to your small business pathway, put a QR code on a shelf talker in the business section, and have staff show one patron how to follow a topic during an appointment. That's a five-minute demo, not a training program.

## Make curation easier for staff

Build a few staff-ready pathways, such as "Preparing for a job search" and "Starting or growing a small business." Each needs a two-sentence description, the best place to start, and two or three related options. Keep the whole guide to two pages.

For [staff training](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/how-to-train-frontline-staff), skip feature tours and use scenarios. "What do we recommend to someone practicing for an interview?" "What do we show a café owner who wants to follow food industry news?" Staff remember answers to real questions.

## Promote one need at a time

Business resources go unused when patrons don't see themselves in the label. "Business database" means nothing to someone looking for their first job.

Use plain, outcome language: "Build skills for your next job" or "Get help starting a small business." Then time it to moments when the need is already visible, like career fairs, tax season, entrepreneurship events, and newcomer outreach.

Pick one audience and one message for a set period so it's easy to repeat and to evaluate.

## Measure more than logins

Logins matter at budget time, but they don't tell you whether a patron moved forward. Pair platform data (PressReader includes usage analytics you can drop into a board report) with what staff actually see:

- Are patrons asking for the resource by name?
- Are workforce partners referring people to it?
- Are staff using it during appointments?
- Do people come back for more?

After a workshop or one-on-one session, ask one question: what did you hope to get done, and did this help? Write down stories too, but keep them honest: "a patron prepped for an interview with it" is a service story, not proof it got them the job.

And when you're steering patrons toward news and analysis, it's worth giving staff a quick refresher on [assessing news credibility](https://www.learnersengaged.com/learners-engaged-blog/how-to-assess-news-credibility) so they can explain why a full-edition source beats a random headline.

## Less is usually more

A smaller set of well-supported resources usually gets more use than a big collection, because people know where to start. Review your business content once a year. Drop outdated guides and merge duplicate pathways. If something isn't getting used, check placement, staff familiarity, and messaging before you cancel it.

Curating business content is ongoing service work, not a one-time purchase. Keep listening to the questions at the desk, in workshops, and on your website. They'll tell you what belongs on the shelf next.
